The process H->ZZ*, with 1 Z...Yes, Z*=virtual Z. The process H->ZZ*, with 1 Z on-shell and 1 Z off shell, is the leading one. The 2-body decay process H->ZZ is not allowed because mh < 2 mZ, whereas the process H->Z*Z* with both Z off-shell does occur, but it is suppressed by the 4-body phase space (as opposed to H->ZZ* who is only 3-body suppressed) and therefore it is subleading.Jesterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08947218566941608850noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2846514233477399562.post-77007550576877569242012-07-02T15:48:38.434+01:002012-07-02T15:48:38.434+01:00Can you explain exactly what the * in the Z* means...Can you explain exactly what the * in the Z* means? It can't just mean virtual, no? Because both Z's should be allowed to be off shell.Dan Grhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11560961071193599339noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2846514233477399562.post-26092953255410289602012-06-30T15:27:43.714+01:002012-06-30T15:27:43.714+01:00You're right, the first steps will be to check...You're right, the first steps will be to check relative rates - do the observed values deviate from the standard model expectations? Beyond that, certain angular distributions can be checked to verify that the new particle really is a CP-even scalar, as opposed to a CP-off scalar or even a tensor particle. Hopefully that information will come before the long shutdown next year.

MichaelAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
